Solar Panels and Hail Resistance - plus will snow overload weight on my panels?

Colorado weather is famously wild—hailstorms, powerful winds, and snow dumps are part of the deal. Naturally, folks wonder if solar panels (and their built-in batteries) can endure these extremes. The good news is yes: Sundog Solar’s standard installations are engineered to handle local conditions, and we run a structural check to confirm your roof is up to the added weight.

While hail is a top concern on the Front Range, modern panels are surprisingly tough. They’re tested to withstand hailstones around one inch in diameter, and often fare just fine in bigger storms too. In fact, some homeowners have found their panels protected the underlying roof from damage! For the rare case where hail might cause a panel crack, insurance generally covers solar equipment. Since your battery isn’t on the roof, it’s even less susceptible to weather. Most of our battery enclosures can be installed indoors or outdoors with proper weatherproofing.

If you live in a higher-elevation region prone to heavy snow, we’ll adjust the tilt and mounting to allow snow to slide off. In some instances, a steeper angle or ground-mount system makes sense. Regardless, our approach ensures your entire solar-plus-battery setup is robust, secure, and built to last for decades—unfazed by hail, snow, or anything else Colorado skies unleash.
